Positive Comments
This was my first trip to South Africa and I had heard horror stories about flying SAA. I had a very pleasant trip. The cabin crew was courteous, seats were average size and comfort - I would not consider them small. I had a special meal which was fine.
Negative Comments
I wish they had better entertainment - they had the usual music, videos and sitcoms but the flight to Johannesburg is quite long (+20 hours) and I soon got bored. My baggage arrived just fine in JNB as I had to clear customs but my bags were delayed on my connecting flight (1 hour long). Luckily I kept my bag tags; I got the idea that the bag search process was quite manual.

If you're flying into Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban, use a luggage shrink wrapping service that secures your baggage from being opened. Apparently there is a luggage pilfering problem though I've never had any issues.
It's cheaper to rent a car from an online travel agent outside of South Africa than locally. (I don't know why!) Saved me 100 Rand on my last rental.
Always bring your international drivers license with you, the police in South Africa are *very* particular about it. You don't want to give them a chance to hassle you at all.
